Magda's Community Center #16: Frozen

Magda Pecsenye

COMMUNITY CENTER

Hi, friends,

Today has been pretty strange and frustrating for me, and I think for other people, too. Personally, I was gone all weekend and my husband was gone all weekend, and it snowed and then started raining on the snow, and I came home and drove through the slush into the garage, and then he came home and drove through the slush into the garage, and then it froze overnight so now we've got a solid 4-5 inches of hard ice frozen onto the driveway with two sets of narrow tracks through them. We're literally frozen in.

And the rest of the day has felt like that, with very little progress made on any fronts. I keep hitting walls wherever I turn, and even work that's usually simple for me has been frozen. (Yes, I'm working today. The only current president I acknowledge is Brie cheese.)

I have been thinking a lot about the fact that there are so very many of us who do not want what is happening now, and that there's a problem with the country being so big, because we could all be out in the streets protesting, but since we're so spread out it wouldn't look like much and wouldn't affect anyone who can stop this. So the idea of a strike, in which we don't work and don't spend any money, becomes more appealing. I've read the number that a strike of 3.5% of the population is the magic number at which the government becomes affected and something must be done. 3.5% of the US population is 11 million people. I think we can do it, but the logistics seemed tough. So someone just decided to step forward and organize. They're taking pledges, in which you put in your name and email and phone number and promise to strike when we hit 11 million committed. They're calling it a strike card. I signed up, and I urge you to sign up and then ask you friends to sign up. If we can push this out and hit more than 11 million, that's putting our shoulders to the wheel, which is about all I can think to do right now.

Sign up here, at generalstrikeus.com (there's an option if you're scared to put in your phone number until there are more people committed, too*). There are more people who've turned in their strike cards now than there were when I started writing this paragraph. We're gaining steam. There's a list of partner orgs on the general strike website and a link to join their Discord to become an organizer.

Things are frozen, but we just need to thaw out a little bit at a time, and chip away at the corner of the ice bit by bit. In no time we'll be able to get out again.

252 million of us didn't vote for this.

Love,

Magda

*I didn't hestitate to put in my email address and phone number because even if this doesn't work I still want to have tried, and I receive emails and texts asking for money from the Democrats all the time so I'm not revealing anything sensitive that isn't already known.

Magda Pecsenye COMMUNITY CENTER Hi, friends, It's been a full two weeks since I've written anything to you! In my defense, Mercury is in retrograde yet again and that affects communication, so the backward motion of the smallest planet is surely what's made me too busy to correspond. Things just keep collapsing in onto us, and I'm sure there's more horrible crap left to come on a Friday night as it always does. Twenty years from now, young people are going to ask us why we're on edge every...

Magda Pecsenye COMMUNITY CENTER Hi, friends, I am so livid right now about Chuck Schumer literally colluding with nazis by voting for cloture that I'm shaking, but what I really want to talk about is how lucky I have been in my life. I know a lot of us have trouble with awful people we went to high school with, and there are a few I never want to see again, but I have a surprising number of friends from high school that I still talk to frequently and make an effort to see when I'm near them....

Magda Pecsenye COMMUNITY CENTER Hi, friends, I keep thinking about how if we ever get out from under this destructive regime I will be so unbothered on a daily basis. I feel like I wasted a lot of years worrying that I wasn't living up to my potential, and just when I started figuring out how to work with my ADHD, the country collapses. All these systems that I thought I wasn't going to be able to navigate correctly because of my ADHD are caving in anyway. And the groups that were supposed to...
